What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Guyana? Let’s take a look at some of the key equality indicators.

Is homosexuality legal in Guyana?

No. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal.

The standard punishment is two years in prison.

However, there are indications that this law is not currently enforced. It’s possible that if a legal challenge was brought to the Caribbean Court of Justice that Guyana’s prohibition of homosexuality would be declared as unconstitutional.

Are there anti-discrimination protections in place for LGBTQ people in Guyana?

No. There are no protections against discrimination on the grounds of sexuality.

Is there Marriage Equality in Guyana?

No. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships.
