Women we love: Lena Waithe

After making her name with an Emmy Award for her work on comedy series Master of None, actress, writer, and film-maker Lena Waithe went on to create the series The Chi.


Her career has continued to go from strength to strength – if you see Lena Waithe’s name attached to a project, it’s generally a pretty good indication that it’s worth watching.


One of her latest productions is Twenties – a comedy series about a young black woman trying to make it as a writer in Los Angeles.



Who is Lena Waithe?

Early life and career

Having grown up in Chicago, Waithe always aspired to a career in the entertainment industry. She studied Cinema and Television Arts at college and subsequently moved to Los Angeles to pursue her ambitions.


Writing was Waithe’s strength, and she picked up work on a number of sitcoms, as well as minor acting roles, steadily building her reputation as a comedian on the rise.


Advocacy and Activism

In her acceptance speech for the Emmy she won in 2017 for Master of None, she spoke to the LGBTQ community, saying: “The things that make us different – those are our superpowers.


Personal life

In 2019, Waithe married Alana Mayo.
