Wentworth Miller is an actor and screenwriter. He rose to prominence following his starring role as Michael Scofield in the television series Prison Break.
Early life
Miller was born in 1972 in Oxford. His parents were American, but living in England at the time.
Miller attended school in Brooklyn, and went on to study English at Princeton University.
Career
In 1995, Miller relocated to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
His first role was as a minor character on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
From there, he steadily began to build his career.
In 2005, Miller was cast as Michael Scofield in Fox Network’s television drama Prison Break. He played the role of a gifted structural engineer who created an elaborate scheme to help his brother, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), escape death row after being found guilty of a crime he did not commit. The series was a hit, and ran for five seasons.
Miller wrote the screenplay for the film Stoker, which was released in 2013.
Miller has most recently been on our screens in The Flash – the superhero series produced by The CW. He also continues to progress a number of screenwriting projects.
Personal life
Miller first publicly discussed his sexuality in 2013. Miller has talked in interviews about the challenges of working in the entertainment industry as a closeted actor.
Addressing questions about whether he will be returning to any future series of Prison Break, Miller wrote on Instagram: “If you’re hot and bothered [because] you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one… That’s your work.” Miller has confirmed that he won’t be returning to the show – writing on social media: “I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”
Miller has also publicly discussed his challenges with depression and mental health.
Recently, Miller has made the point that going forward he’s really only interested in playing gay characters.
“My gayness was largely erased (by me, for starters) in the first decade of my career…” Miller wrote in an Instagram post. “It is my want, now, to centre it in a way that cannot be missed by myself or anyone else.”
